Larson has been performing professionally on drums and percussion for the past 34 years. As a big band drummer, Larson was
the driving power behind the Internationally recognized Millikin University Jazz Lab Band of the mid 1970's and the Western
Illinois University Studio Jazz Orchestra of the early 80's. His performing career continued in the Midwest where
he freelanced with numerous regional and national touring groups. His most recent performing experiences include the State
Farm Employees Jazz Band, the Heartland Jazz Orchestra and the Illinois Central Jazz Train Orchestra. Larson also was the
rhythmic drive behind nationally recognized saxophone phenom, Adam Larson.
His teaching career
spans 34 years and he has influenced hundreds of students over those years. His work in the marching percussion ensemble genre
includes leading the nationally recognized Lincoln-Way Community High School marching percussion section, the nationally ranked,
and 6 time state class champion, IVC Grey Ghost Marching Percussion ensemble, the state champion Normal Community High School
drumline and current State of Illinois Class Champion percussion section of the University High School marching Pioneers.
As a private instructor, John has influenced numerous private drum students including world
renowned New York-based jazz drummer Matt Wilson. Other former students include Dr. Nicole Whittaker, Knox College, Kevin
Hart, freelance musician in the Midwest, Tim Brickner adn many others who now perform and teach in the musical arts.
is a sought after clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor in the jazz and marching arenas.
